Wash Day after SCUBA! :-)

Hey There Guys!

We are here again for yet another Wash Day Check in! :-)
This weekend, Sunday to be exact, I went Scuba Diving!
Its been too long - almost 2 months!
Work has kept me really busy.

As usual it was great! I do have to prepare my hair Pre-Dive though, because essentially I'm soaking my hair in salt water for just under 2 hours for that day

  • Ensure hair is de-tangled
  • Coat with a Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Then coat with Coconut Oil - this is all to reduce the amount of salt water that my hair will soak up while under water.
  • Braid it up! - to prevent tangling that can happen when your hair is loose underwater. Loose hair can get caught and tangled in your Scuba Gear!!! No Bueno!!!
  • Put Braids in a Bun then tie a scarf around it all! - This is again to ensure the hair doesn't unravel and get loose under water - making it prone to tangling and snagging in my gear.

*side-eye to myself*
Honestly sometimes I feel kindah "shame" to come and tell you guys I didn't follow my own advice, but the truth is the truth!
Lol lets proceed...
  • Ensure hair is de-tangled - CHECK!
  • Braid it up! -CHECK!
  • Coat with a Moisturizing Conditioner - In my excitement I forgot to put the conditioner in at home! BUT thank goodness there's a supermarket opposite the dive shop so I bought a Cheapie Bottle of Suave Naturals Juicy Green Apple Conditioner and applied it to the length of my braids.
  • Then coat with Coconut Oil - I forgot my Coconut Oil! Smh, ahh well, the Conditioner Alone would have to do, better than nothing I guessed :-)
  • Put Braids in a Bun then tie a scarf around it all! - CHECK!
*Scarf - Check! RayBans - Check!*
This is to prevent snagging and hair breakage.

After soaking in salt water for just under 2 hours, my hair needed some TLC. The Conditioner I put on helped, but I think it missed the coconut oil step because it was slightly more straw-like than usual post dive...
  • Hopped into the Shower - I'm a hopper, lol - and rinsed my hair with cold water.
  • Under the running water I un-did the braids. I did it this way because I figured the running water would help in the detangling process, with as little manipulation as possible.
  • I Then proceeded to Co-Wash with my Mane & Tail Deep Moisturizing Conditioner and I mixed in a handful (yes, I know, my hand is very heavy when it comes to the use of my conditioners) of my newly purchased Suave Naturals Juicy Green Apple Conditioner for good measure.
  • Scalp Massage done
  • I then rinsed with warm water and proceeded to Add the same 2 conditioners again. I then put on a plastic Cap and let this sit for 20 minutes.
  • I did not use heat because I had a really bad headache that evening - Boat engine fumes on the way back to land, not cool, oh well! :-)
  • I Then did an Oil Rinse: - i.e. I coated the hair with Coconut Oil and did a light detangle, then rinsed this out with warm water followed by Cold water.
  • Proceeded to Air Dry as normal with my Trusty Grapeseed Oil + Castor Oil Mix and Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl and Styling Milk.
  • My hair was then put in 2 braids, and a braid out bun done for work the next morning.
Overall I'd say My Wash Day was a Success, because my hair felt quite soft

*Shout out to my "Bon Jan" Mason, who is my designated picture-taker at work*
but today I'm noticing a bit of breakage, and I realize its been a little while since I did a strong protein treatment...
I think I'll do an Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment this evening,
& I'll let you know how it goes!

I hope that you girlies had a Good Wash Day,

Have a great Wednesday!

  1. Lol to "the truth is the truth!" Funny, but you are so correct with that statement. Don't be ashamed of not following your own advice. I think we all do that sometimes. I know I'm guilty at least. Just take it as a lesson learned - now you know your conditioner + coconut oil routine really does work best!

Your hair is SO thick! I love it!

    1. Heya girlie! Girl yeah the truth is the truth, you kindah just have to put it out there, we all are human after all. And yes next time I'll definitely remember to use the coconut oil pre-dive, my hair missed it! In fact I may add castor oil or something to make it a bit thicker and "coatier" lol. Thanks so much for your kind words and thanx for stopping by! :-)

  2. Although scuba diving sounds fun I just don't trust underwater critters---you never know whats out there and I can't swim. How long have you been using the Shea Moisture hair milk? I've tried one from carol's daughter and I loved it

    1. Heya Harlem! At first I'm not gonna lie I was so scared of what may be lurking down there just waiting for me to jump in like bait, LOL, funny enough my biggest fear was jumping in and landing ontop of a shark, - just my luck - LOL! But I found my imagination was 100 times worse than reality, its actually really relaxing and enjoyable. I've been using the Shea Moisture hair milk for a few months now, I luv it, some days more than others but overall I luv it, I've never tried any Carol's Daughters products, I must be the only hhj girl who hasn't on the ENTIRE planet! but its not readily available here. :-( I'd love to try it though one day! Thanks so much for stopping by! :-)

  3. I use almost the SAME exact prep routine when I go swimming. It's good to know that it works for scuba diving too! I've heard that Suave Naturals has amazing slip. Was that your experience too?

    Thanks for sharing chica!

    1. Heya KLP! First of all thanks for stopping by my blog posts, I feel so specialziz! :-D Yes! I saw this routine first on Urban Bush Babes Blog a good while back, and I saw yours and I saw Jeni's as well, and I kindah mished mashed it all and tried it out. I will say it works well for me for the first dive, but by the second dive (there are 2 dives in a day) it starts to wear off. I'm thinking for this reason I may try using something that's thicker than coconut oil in future... I have some Ghee butter lying around... its a thought... And YES, surprise surprise, the Suave conditioner was actually pretty decent, and I just picked it up because it was the cheapest one on the shelf! life huh?! So I'm glad I stumbled upon it.
Thanks again for stopping by! hugz :-D

  4. I love the ocean from a long distance. Your growth is crazyyy!

    1. Thanks so much girlie! & thanks for stopping by! :-) Hugz

  5. Your hair is awesome! I love the water but am too chicken to scuba dive.

    1. Aww Thanks so much Jay! I loved your flexirod set this wash day! Your hair looks healthy & soft :-D

  6. Your hair looks great Rachel!!! I've had scuba diving on my bucket list for years but I'm terrified of deep water... If I can't stand it in with my head above water (I'm 5'7"), not one toe is going in :(

    1. Thanks so much for the compliment Jeni! :-D As for the scuba diving, if its on your bucket list, I suspect one day you'll just feel adventurous, say "what the heck" and just do it! Let me know when you do! :-) Thanks again for stopping by!
